Dead Man’s Bones

Dead Mans Bones

People have been doing the Monster Mash for nearly fifty years now.  Enough is enough.  It’s time for some new Halloween classics.  And that is exactly what Dead Man’s Bones is here to deliver.  Ryan Gosling (yep, that guy from The Notebook) and Zach Shields teamed up with the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children’s Choir to put together a macabre album about all things ghoulish and ghostly.  If you turned Joy Division and Arcade Fire into a pack of flesh-eating zombies, their music would sound something like this.  Stand out tracks include Dead Hearts, Pa Pa Power, and My Body’s a Zombie for You.  Dead Man’s Bones ($13)

Pearl Jam – Backspacer

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

We have to admit that we are slightly biased when it comes to Pearl Jam, as we have been 10 Club members who saw some of these songs live in Berlin this past August. For those of you who have not heard a record past Vitology, you will be pleasantly surprised by the mix of raw emotions you feel listening to Backspacer. The song Supersonic mirrors punk rock classics from The Clash, Force of Nature and Amongst the Waves deliver some patented Mike McCready guitar solos and riffs, and The Fixer is typical Vedder giving us a upbeat rock-out anthem to shout aloud at live shows. Dust off your cassette deck Ipod, and pick this up as an ITunes LP or as an exclusive at your local Target. ($12)

Ludovico Einaudi - Divenire

Ludovico Einaudi - Divenire

It’s hard to believe we didn’t hear about this album earlier.  It came out in 2008, and is Italian composer Ludovido Einaudi’s 9th release.  It has been featured across the globe by Sony, Top Gear, The BBC, the film The Reader, and even in recent NBA playoff commercials.  Standouts include “Divenire”, “Andare”, “Primavera”, and “Fly”.  Classified by most as classical, this album features minimalistic composing combined with modern sounds akin to Sigur Ros, along with haunting piano and string arrangements.  The perfect album to add some culture to your 80’s hair band collection.  Divenire ($22)

cyfi wireless sports speaker

Looking something like a squashed Nerf mini-football, the cy·fi is a miniature stereo for your active pursuits.  It uses a wireless transmitter to allow you to broadcast your tunes from any dock-equipped iPod to the speaker pod.  Attach it to your bike, backpack strap, messenger bag, snowboard, dog — you get the idea — and your tunes will be blasting.  Better yet, if you have multiple speaker pods, you can broadcast your tunes to up to four speakers at once.  Perfect for your next pub crawl, cruiser ride, or critical mass.  It comes with a desktop charging stand, and is available in a Bluetooth model for the non-iPod crowd.  cy·fi Wireless Sports Speaker ($149 or $159)

Live at KEXP: Volume 5

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

livevol5cover

While the satisfaction of giving money to a non-profit group is always great, we do like the kind of philanthropy advertised as “all proceeds go to”–you know, the kind where you get something cool AND donate to a good cause.  We have been long-time supporter’s of Seattle’s non-profit music station 90.3 KEXP, both listening on the radio, and streaming online.  So it’s been with much anticipation that we have been waiting for today, when Live at KEXP Volume 5 finally hits stores.  All tracks are by artists who have performed live at KEXP’s studios, and reflect the stations always diverse, always hip, song choices.  Featured on volume five are bands such as DeVotchKa, Of Montreal, The Hold Steady, Zion, and The Moondoggies.

AIC_FINAL_COVERsmall

The Seattle rockers  Alice in Chains are back and with a brand new lead singer in William Duvall. The 11 song grungefest is going to be the return to this genre as they begin their September headlining tour. They haven’t released an official single yet; however, they released the song “A Looking In View” on their website and it has been slowly climbing the rock charts. They even got Elton John to play on the piano for a song that was dedicated to late singer Layne Staley. The I-Tunes pre-order beings this Tuesday and it’s quite likely that you will get a single of the song “Check My Brain” early with the pre-order. Jerry Cantrell and the rest of the boys will be Rockin’ Your Brain when this drops on September 29th. ($10)
